Georgia lost the first governor in its history to serve two terms (1975-83) on Friday, July 16, 2004, when George Busbee died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of seventy-six. During his eight-year administration, Busbee oversaw the establishment of a statewide kindergarten program, the completion of Georgia's interstate highway system, and a new state constitution. He did much to attract new business and industry to the state during the economic downturn of the late 1970s.
