| Biotechnology in Georgia |
 |

Biotechnology, the science of adapting biological systems or organisms for specific purposes, has altered Georgia's agricultural
and scientific landscapes in myriad ways. Research in biotechnology occurs at institutions across Georgia in the diverse fields
of medicine, agriculture, and environmental policy.
Medical researchers at Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, both in Atlanta, and at the Georgia
Health Sciences University in Augusta explore the genetic underpinnings of such human ailments as Alzheimer's disease, cancer,
diabetes, and Down syndrome to discover new methods of diagnosis and treatment. Meanwhile, farmers in the state are able to
plant new strains of crops that resist herbicides, insects, and disease, thereby improving the quality and yield of their
harvests. Many of these strains were developed at the Georgia Experiment Station in Griffin and the Coastal Plain Experiment
Station in Tifton. And in a process known as phytoremediation, which is studied extensively at the University of Georgia in
Athens, trees and plants are modified to remove dangerous toxins from water and soil at contaminated environmental sites in
the state.
These and other practical applications of biotechnology have a significant impact on the economy of the state and the well-being
of its citizens.
