"Swedish Girls" (1968), oil on canvas, 50 x 36"
|
Alice Neel (1900-1984)
Swedish Girls, a coming-of-age portrait of two cousins, is an example of Alice Neel's best work. An expressive figure and portrait painter,
Neel creates tension by posing the two girls on the corner of a backless couch, seating them awkwardly. On the verge of physical
and psychological change, one of the girls faces the end of her childhood innocence, and the other approaches adulthood. They
appear wary but intrigued with what lies before them.
