David Gilmour Blythe was known for his satiric genre paintings. The artist aligned himself with the Know-Nothings, a political party that actively sought to prevent new immigrants from voting or holding office. In Land of Liberty a Native American reluctantly offers a peace pipe to a recent Irish immigrant. The painting is a reminder that intolerance and prejudice are integral parts of American history.
