"Venus on Sixth Avenue" (1937), oil on canvas, 24 x 30"
|
James Guy (1909-1983)
Surrealist painter James Guy created this political allegory in 1937. The central tiny figure, who represents big business,
forces a Macy's salesgirl, gagged and wearing blinders, to turn away from her fellow working women, who are on strike. Instead,
she is forced to gaze at the fairy-tale image of womankind. "Sixth Avenue" in the title refers to the location of Macy's department
store in New York City.
