"A Home in the Woods" (1868), oil on canvas, 18 1/4 x 34 1/2"
Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823-1880)

Sanford Robinson Gifford was famous for his realistic depictions of American landscapes. In A Home in the Woods he employs traditional compositional elements: a detailed foreground, a middle ground with reflective water, and a background of mountains. Gifford emphasizes the effects of color and light filtered through the atmosphere, a technique that made him one of the country's leading luminist painters.
