William Merritt Chase (1849-1916)

This painting of the artist's eleven-year-old daughter shows William Merritt Chase at the height of his skills as a portraitist. My Daughter, Alice reflects the artist's fatherly adoration as much as his skill at visual rendering. Chase's bravura brushwork energizes an otherwise subdued subject, suggesting that he knew of the enthusiasm and delight that lay just beneath the surface of his beloved child.
