Introduction
This exhibition, from the Telfair Museum of Art, marks the first survey of the work of self-taught artists who have lived within a 100-mile radius of Savannah over the past
century. In addition to more-traditional media, the show includes fragments of outdoor art environments. Like the best self-taught
art of any region, this art draws strength not from the artists' lack of formal arts education but from emotional and spiritual
depth, formal inventiveness, intriguing ideas, and visual power. The artists have employed the raw material of folklore, environment,
history, and culture that make Savannah unique.
