Family Record Chart

This family record chart was marketed to African American families during the 1880s. Because detailed family records were not typically kept for slaves prior to the Civil War, conducting genealogical research has often posed a challenge for black families. This difficulty is depicted by the chart's pictorial representations of life before and after the war.
