A Lower Muscogee (Creek) Indian chief, William McIntosh was born to a Scottish father and Muscogee mother and was fluent in the culture and language of both Muscogee and white societies. He supported the United States in its efforts to obtain Muscogee land, and his role in the 1825 Treaty of Indian Springs was considered a betrayal by the Muscogee.
